Ransomware attacks reached their highest level of 2026 in August, according to NCC Group’s latest threat report. It recorded 1,073 attacks worldwide, 12% more than in July.
Key findings
- The Qilin ransomware group was the most active, behind about 15% of all attacks
- Industrial and manufacturing businesses were hit hardest (31% of attacks), followed by retail and consumer businesses (18%) and healthcare (12%)
- A newer group called Aurora is breaking in through weaknesses in VPNs and by stealing login details
How to protect your business
- Keep VPNs, firewalls and other internet-facing systems fully patched
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, VPN and remote access
- Keep regular backups that are stored offline or separately, and test that you can restore them
- Use managed endpoint protection that can detect and stop ransomware automatically
- Have a simple plan for what your team should do if an attack happens
