Microsoft has announced two Azure changes that businesses running servers in the cloud should plan for.

1. New lifecycle policy for Azure virtual machines

Published on 28 September 2026, the policy explains how older VM types are phased out. Every VM series now moves through four stages:

  • Current – recommended for new deployments
  • Extended – still supported, but you should start planning a move
  • End of Life – retirement announced; new deployments restricted
  • Retired – no longer available or supported

Microsoft recommends using Azure Advisor and Azure Service Health to find VMs that need upgrading.

2. Azure Reservations exchange change from 1 February 2027

From 1 February 2027, Reservations for services that support Azure Savings Plans can no longer be exchanged. If your workloads change often, a Savings Plan may now be the more flexible choice.

What you should do

Review which VM types you’re running and how your Reservations are set up before early 2027. We can run an Azure health and cost review for you.
